Manchester United have signed Marcel Sabitzer on loan from Bayern Munich for the remainder of the season.

Marcel Sabitzer joins Manchester United on loan after falling out of favour at Bayern Munich, having not started a single fixture for the German champions since the return of domestic football after the World Cup.

Sabitzer made a name for himself while playing for RB Leipzig between 2014 and 2021, appearing a total of 229 times for the club, scoring 52 goals in that time.

Speaking on signing for the club, Sabitzer said: “Sometimes in life you have to make quick and important decisions. From the moment I heard about this opportunity I knew it was right for me. I am a competitive player; I want to win and help the club achieve its aims this season.

“I feel that I am at my peak as a player, and that I can contribute a lot of experience and energy to the squad. I am excited to start with my new team-mates and manager and to show my qualities to Manchester United fans.”

Football director John Murtough added: “Marcel is a player that we have watched for a long time. The opportunity arose quickly, and we knew that he was someone with the ability and character to make an impact. He adds further quality to our squad and experience to the dressing room, and all of us are pleased to be welcoming him to Manchester United.”

He joins the club as an emergency signing after it was revealed that Christian Eriksen will be side lined for at least three months after a nasty challenge by Andy Carroll during United’s 3-1 FA Cup victory over Reading on Saturday.

“I think you can never fill that gap because very player has his own characteristics, identity, another player will always fill in a different way, but it doesn’t mean you have to be less successful,” Erik ten Hag mentioned on filling the gap left by Eriksen’s injury.

Sabitzer may do just that. He is a tenacious, daring, high-energy and creative midfielder, something United have been lacking to some extent. As he will likely be pairing with Casemiro in midfield, it is obvious that the two players certainly compliment each other.

United were also linked with Atletico Madrid forward Yannick Carrasco and a host of other options, however it was reported that Ten Hag and United preferred the profile of Sabitzer instead.
