Manchester United have been offered the chance to sign Yannick Carrasco from Atletico Madrid as a replacement for Christian Eriksen, who will be out of action for around three months.

United confirmed the injury news on Tuesday afternoon after Eriksen was pictured wearing a CAM boot and using crutches following a horror tackle from Andy Carroll in the FA Cup win against Reading on the weekend.

Despite manager Erik ten Hag saying that a signing on deadline day will be ‘difficult’, reports from The Telegraph have revealed that the club are rapidly looking for a replacement before the window slams shut.

The report from Jason Burt says that The Reds have been offered the chance to sign Cassasco from Atletico Madrid and that there has been contact between United and the Belgium international’s representatives.

However, an eventual move to Barcelona, who have a non-mandatory buy option for the player in the deal which saw Memphis Depay move to the Metropolitano Stadium earlier this month, is the likelier scenario. Barca have the option to buy for around €20 million.

United have contacted several of the leading clubs around Europe as they look to identify a potential loan signing before the deadline. The report adds that these clubs include Atletico, Barcelona, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. So far, United have been left frustrated.

Should a signing not be possible, it is expected that Fred will be starting alongside Casemiro, as he does for Brazil. Ten Hag is adamant that it is a partnership that can thrive in the Premier League.

“He’s playing together with Casemiro in the Brazil squad, that’s not the worst squad in the world,” said Ten Hag of Fred. “They have so many choices they can make, but they play together and that tells something about the quality Fred has and what he can contribute to the team.

“You see against Tottenham and Man City, when he [Fred] is coming on last game he scores a goal, he has a lot of qualities, and they’re a good combination, Casemiro and Fred.”
