Erik ten Hag will be without Christian Eriksen until late April or early May, Manchester United have confirmed.

Eriksen, 30, was forced off the pitch against Reading in United’s FA Cup win on Saturday evening.

Andy Carroll, who was later sent off in the match, recklessly lunged into a tackle on the Dane after losing control of the ball.

The midfielder was pictured leaving Old Trafford wearing a CAM boot and using crutches.

Manchester United have released the following statement: “Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen is expected to be out of action for an extended period because of an ankle injury sustained in our Emirates FA Cup victory over Reading on Saturday.

“Our Danish midfielder was withdrawn in the second half of the 3-1 win, after being caught by a tackle from Reading striker Andy Carroll, who was later sent off for two bookable offences.

“While investigations are continuing, initial assessments indicate that Eriksen is likely to be out until late April or early May.

“The 30-year-old’s absence will be a big disappointment to manager Erik ten Hag and fans, given the consistency of his performances throughout the season so far, making 31 appearances since arriving at Old Trafford.

“However, there is hope that Christian can return in time to play a role in the final stages of the campaign.

“We all wish Christian the best of luck for a speedy recovery.”

In his pre-match press conference for the second leg of United’s Carabao Cup semi-final against Nottingham Forest, Ten Hag is expected to open up about the injury and whether the club will be looking for a last-minute replacement on deadline day.

Eriksen has been a crucial part of United’s team so far this season, starting all but six games.

He also has provided the most assists for the club this term, setting up nine goals.

Fred has impressed lately for The Reds and is the expected deputy to come into the side alongside Casemiro if there is no business made before the window closes.
