Manchester United could sign a Champions League star in the summer, who would have been perfect for Rúben Amorim’s system.
Manchester United’s summer transfer plans will not have been fully decided just yet, as CEO Omar Berrada and Director of Football Jason Wilcox must agree terms with the new head coach.
While signing players just for a manager appeared to end at Old Trafford with Erik ten Hag’s departure, the recruitment team is still unlikely to make a transfer if the head coach is incredibly against it.
No matter who the next head coach is, United will be focusing on replacing Casemiro with another top central midfielder. They may have to sign more than one for the engine room if Manuel Ugarte leaves, too.
Other positions of interest will be a new left-winger, with the latest Marcus Rashford update, a new central defender, if Harry Maguire doesn’t sign a new contract, and potentially a new left-back.
If Patrick Dorgu is to be considered a frontline option from now on, after his brilliant start there for Michael Carrick, United will be searching for a Luke Shaw backup, who is known to struggle with injuries when asked to play too many games.
United “closely monitoring” Serie A star
Federico Dimarco primarily plays as a left-wing-back for Inter Milan in a back five formation, often running down the left-hand side before crossing the ball into the box. He has seven goals and 14 assists this season, including one goal in the Champions League.
Football Transfers have reported that United are “closely monitoring” the Italy international, who could be available for as little as £38 million – a good price for a player of Dimarco’s quality.
The 28-year-old’s contract runs out in the summer of 2027, so a summer move looks a real possibility if United activate their interest.
Dimarco would’ve been a good signing for Rúben Amorim as a left-wing-back, but he could also be good for Michael Carrick or a future head coach if that right-back inverts into central defence when in possession.

How would Dimarco fit in at United?
Dimarco would bring a new set of experience to Old Trafford if he joined in the summer, likely becoming one of the most important characters in the dressing room, especially with Casemiro already confirmed to be leaving.

Shaw would drop to the bench, which he will need to do sooner rather than later due to his fitness issues, and Dimarco would take the starting spot.
When United are on the ball, Dimarco would fly forward and hold the width on the left flank, allowing Matheus Cunha to invert into his more natural left-half-space. Lisandro Martínez would move over to cover the left defensive channel, with the right-centre back (Maguire or Matthijs de Ligt) moving more central. The right-back (Diogo Dalot or Noussair Mazraoui) would play a more defensive role, often moving inside to form a back three.
As for the defensive shape, Dimarco would drop back to left-back, and United would slot into a back four, as they play with Carrick at the helm.
