Manchester United are going to make a double transfer move for the first time since Ole Gunnar Solskjær was in charge.
Manchester United have endured a dismal Premier League campaign, with their hopes now hinging on success in the Europa League as they gear up for a semi-final clash against Athletic Club.
Erik ten Hag was dismissed earlier in the season, and Rúben Amorim took the reins in November. However, the Portuguese manager has faced considerable challenges since his arrival.
It’s evident that the squad requires substantial reinforcements, particularly in the attacking department, and the likes of Jason Wilcox also need to ensure the recruitment is right.
Scoring goals has been a persistent problem under Amorim’s leadership. In the Premier League, both Rasmus Højlund and Joshua Zirkzee have managed just three goals apiece.
They have each struggled to adapt to the demands of playing in the Premier League after joining from Italian clubs and United seem to want to bolster the squad with proven options.
United going to make transfer decision for first time since Solskjær
Matheus Cunha and Liam Delap are the two priority targets at United in the summer window to improve the attack at Amorim’s disposal.
Reports have stated that the Reds are the favourites to sign Cunha from Wolves while they battle the likes of Chelsea to secure Delap’s services.
Adding Premier League-proven players to the squad is something United haven’t done enough of in recent years. Those players are always more likely to adapt and perform quicker than those who have never played in England’s top fight.
United have signed just one senior player from a Premier League club in the last five years – Mason Mount from Chelsea. That move has failed so far, but mostly due to the injuries he has sustained.
You have to go back to the summer of 2019 to when United signed two Premier League players in the same window. Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka joined Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.
It was a combined £130 million for those two signings – highlighting the downside of these moves, with players sometimes being overpriced – but they were two of the club’s more consistent performers over the last six years.
Amorim needs United signings to hit the ground running
United are in need of quick and major improvements next term and in order to do that, Amorim needs most of his new signings this summer to hit the ground running.
That is generally easier when you are buying players who are accustomed to the Premier League.
Cunha and Delap have scored a combined 26 goals in the division this term for teams towards the bottom of the table. United’s top goalscorer, Bruno Fernandes, has eight goals.
These signings would immediately improve United’s squad but there will need to be a mix of other additions as well if Amorim really wants to see significant improvements.
