Man Utd’s thoughts on Scott McTominay return revealed as “concrete interest” claim made

Scott McTominay has been linked with a move back to the Premier League, as Manchester United’s interest has now been revealed.

Scott McTominay left Manchester United at the start of the 2024/25 Premier League season for just over £25 million, with Erik ten Hag looking to appeal to Financial Fair Play restrictions, despite selling James Garner in the summer before for similar reasons.

Having never played outside of United before, McTominay signed for Napoli and instantly became a fan favourite, due to his impressive goal-scoring form from midfield. In 36 appearances last season, the Scotland international scored 13 and registered four assists.

The former United No. 39 was so impressive in front of goal for the Italian giants last year that he has now been moved to the left wing, with Kevin de Bruyne coming into central midfield.

Despite his brilliant form, McTominay has been linked with a move away from Naples at the end of the current campaign. He has largely been linked with Premier League teams, but Marcus Rashford’s Barcelona have also been mentioned in recent weeks.

United’s thoughts on McTominay return revealed

Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are two clubs that have been linked with McTominay in recent weeks, but now United look set to enter the race if their former player is interested in a return to the club.

Mark Brus of Caught Offside has said that United are “keen” on a McTominay return, although a return may not be likely as the Scotland international is “happy at Napoli.”

His source went on to say: “There is concrete interest in Scott McTominay. Manchester United would have him back and keep an eye on Newcastle and Tottenham. Barcelona also view him as someone who could be a good fit for their midfield.”

Even if United are “keen” on a McTominay transfer, it remains unlikely because he isn’t expected to push for a move, and Napoli are happy to keep the Serie A MVP of last season.

Could McTominay be a good option for United?

While a transfer may not be possible, McTominay could be a good option for Rúben Amorim if he persists with the 3-4-2-1 formation going forward. However, there has been some speculation over a structure change in recent weeks.

In his last season at Old Trafford, McTominay played more as a box-crashing No.10, who could make runs beyond the centre-forward. If he returned to the club, McTominay would likely feature in the front three instead of Matheus Cunha or Bryan Mbeumo.

However, United are searching for a new defensive midfielder to partner Bruno Fernandes, despite Casemiro’s impressive start to the season.

If McTominay is willing to return, he must play as an attacking midfielder and not a double pivot player, as that would just be a waste of his talents again.
