Manchester United have seemingly decided on a transfer U-turn surrounding Scott McTominay, issuing a blow to four Premier League clubs.

Scott McTominay‘s 2023/24 season at Manchester United has been his most impressive, with the midfielder scoring 10 goals under Erik ten Hag.

Since debuting under Jose Mourinho in 2017, McTominay has proven to be a versatile asset for every manager over his seven-year tenure with the first team. However, this season initially seemed poised to be his last at Old Trafford.

In 2023, a £30 million transfer to West Ham was nearly finalised, but the deal fell through, resulting in McTominay staying at United for another season. Now, with INEOS needing to generate funds for new acquisitions, McTominay is drawing interest from various Premier League clubs.

According to reports earlier this month, four English clubs were circling McTominay, with Fulham, Newcastle United, West Ham United, and Southampton all keen. It was said that a bid from at least one club was “expected soon.”

Fulham then lodged an offer believed to sit at around £17 million, which was rejected. Galatasaray vice-president Ibrahim Hatipoglu also confirmed that the Super Lig side were interested in McTominay.

However, although United were previously thought to be open to selling him, the club seems to have changed their mind. According to Football.Scotland, United are set to trigger the one-year extension in McTominay’s contract.

Ten Hag is said to value McTominay as a prized piece of his United puzzle, which means he could now be set to stay at the club. His current contract expires next summer, but the one-year option means he would be tied to the club until 2026.

“We have very good players, so there will always be an interest from other clubs,” Ten Hag said when asked about transfer rumours around McTominay last week.

“When you score 10 goals in a season and also perform very good for Scotland, then there will be an interest. But we want to keep him because he is a very important player for our squad.

“What he can contribute, as we saw last season once we had our sixes available, he could play in a more advanced role and he is a highly interesting player for our team.”
