Fabrizio Romano has provided Manchester United with a boost surrounding their reported interest in Bayern Munich left-back Alphonso Davies.

Manchester United have struggled with left-back problems across the last 18 months, with both Tyrell Malacia and Luke Shaw consistently unavailable for selection.

Erik ten Hag has had to get very creative with his selections across the last 12 months, with Diogo Dalot, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Lisandro Martínez having covered the positon since the turn of the year.

Since the return of the year, United have not had the luxury of selecting either Shaw or Malacia. The Dutch international has been sidelined for around 18 months following multiple knee problems, while Shaw is continually battling calf and hamstring setbacks.

Life has even gotten to the point where the Dutch manager is reportedly considering using 36-year-old reserve centre-back Jonny Evans on the left flank for some defensive security.

Interest in Davies

With this in mind, the club are reportedly interested in 23-year-old Canadian left-back Alphonso Davies, who currently plays for Bayern Munich.

German media first reported United’s eye on the player on Tuesday morning, with the Old Trafford outfit reportedly ‘desiring’ the star and having gathered information on the 23-year-old.

Davies’ current contract with Bayern Munich expires in June 2025. If he does not sign a new deal before the beginning of January, he can enter official negotiations with any club he chooses to reach a pre-contract agreement.

United were also continually linked with left-backs during the 2024 summer window, so it is no surprise that the club are looking to sign a new left-sided defender in 2025.

Fabrizio Romano’s boost

Famed transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has now provided an update on the situation. Although Davies has been heavily linked with Real Madrid, Romano has explained that the race is open for his signature.

It was previously thought that he was close to a move to Madrid, but in a twist, Romano has explained that while there is no agreement in place with United, there is also no agreement close to being struck with any other club, either.

Speaking on his YouTube channel surrounding the latest on Davies, Romano said, “Interesting situation. As of today, I can guarantee that there is nothing agreed with Man United.

“In this moment, nothing is imminent, or close, or advanced so that’s the point. The situation of Alphonso Davies remains absolutely open. Remember, the interest of Real Madrid is also there.

“But, at the moment, that’s it for Alphonso. No changes are expected in October. From what I’m hearing, in November and December, talks will be in important phase for what is going to happen in 2025.”

It feels as if the Davies situation will become one to watch over the coming months. Bayern will want to hold on to their player but are known for not giving into wage demands, while the attraction of either United or Madrid could sway the player into finding a new career path in the Premier League or La Liga.
