Manchester United handed major boost as “incredible” Tottenham star ruled out of Premier League clash
Manchester United have been handed a major boost as one of Tottenham’s “incredible” player is ruled out of the Premier League clash this weekend.
Manchester United are set to return to Premier League action on Sunday afternoon with a high-stakes clash against Tottenham Hotspur in North London.
The two sides have already served up a memorable encounter at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this season, with Spurs edging a breathtaking 4-3 contest to send Rúben Amorim’s men crashing out of the Carabao Cup.
Both clubs have struggled to find their rhythm this campaign, currently sitting 13th and 14th in the table, with United holding a narrow two-point lead over their hosts.
Sunday’s showdown carries major implications for both managers—Amorim is eager to maintain his squad’s upward trajectory, while Postecoglou faces mounting scrutiny as Spurs fans grow increasingly frustrated with their team’s faltering form.
Spurs hit with major injury blow
Earlier this season, United suffered from a significant injury crisis, but their current problems are not too impactful after several players have returned under Amorim. His only major absences this weekend are Mason Mount, Lisandro Martínez, and Luke Shaw.
However, Spurs have up to eight major players who are sidelined with injury, with Postecoglou consistently pointing out that many of his side’s struggles are down to his lack of available players.
Although James Maddison and Destiny Udogie are expected to be fit to play on the weekend, the Daily Mail have confirmed that star defender Micky van de Ven will be unavailable for the tie due to ongoing concerns about his hamstring.
Although the Dutchman returned from a near two-month lay-off following a hamstring injury against Elfsborg at the end of January, he has not played since, with the Australian boss explaining the club are managing his minutes.
Although fans would have hoped to see Van de Ven back in action against United, his absence is set to continue.
Van de Ven was “incredible” against United
This is great news for Amorim and United after the centre-back ripped Erik ten Hag’s team to shreds at Old Trafford in a 3-0 win earlier this season.
In the third minute of the tie, the Dutch centre-half picked up the ball in his own third before steamrolling United’s entire defence and cutting the ball back to Brennan Johnson to open the scoring.
“Absolutely brilliant,” former Manchester United defender Gary Neville said in reaction to the goal. “One of the best runs I’ve ever seen from a centre-back.
“Van de Ven just steps in, and this is absolutely incredible: he drives through four Manchester United players and the cross, well it’s just wonderful.
“There were enough players back to stop it but it was unstoppable. De Ligt starts off running too late and misreads the pace of the centre-back. It’s amazing and devastating.”
