Manchester United have been urged to sign a former Manchester City academy player who is available on a free transfer this summer.

Scott McTominay‘s 2023/24 season at Manchester United has been his best yet, scoring 10 goals under Erik ten Hag.

Since his debut in 2017 under Jose Mourinho, McTominay has been a valuable utility player for every manager he has worked with during his seven years with the first team. However, this season seems to be his last at United, with UtdDistrict understanding that the club is 100% open to selling him this summer.

In 2023, McTominay was on the verge of leaving Old Trafford, with a £30 million transfer to West Ham nearly complete. However, the deal fell through, and he stayed for another season. Now, with INEOS needing to raise funds for new signings, McTominay is drawing interest from several Premier League clubs, while his midfielder partner Casemiro is seemingly free to exit Old Trafford, too.

With this in mind, United are looking to sign a new midfielder this summer. Considering budget restraints, they have been urged to consider Adrien Rabiot, who is available for free from Juventus following the expiry of his contract last month.

Not many know that the French international used to star in Manchester City’s academy. However, former United striker and club legend Andy Cole remembers Rabiot’s performances fondly and has proposed him as a signing this summer.

“I remember watching him when he was a kid at Manchester City,” Cole told BetFred. “He’s the same age as my son, and they were both at the club at the same time. I could tell that he had something about him and was very talented.

“If the opportunity came around to sign him on a free, then why wouldn’t you consider it? He’s done very well for Juventus, he’s a mainstay in the French national team, and it’s not easy to get in that side because of some of the midfielders they have.

“I think he’s a really good player, and he would definitely improve what Manchester United have. Thinking long-term again, he would make Manchester United a better team and I wouldn’t turn my nose up at it if you can get him on a free. He’s a good player.”

Reports from earlier this summer claimed that Rabiot and United were in “constant contact”.

It was added that, while there is competition for the 29-year-old, United are pushing hardest to land him and have been in constant contact with Rabiot in recent months. Other claims from Italy have suggested that he wants the move to Old Trafford this summer and is waiting for a deal to materialise.
