Premier League star responds to Manchester United transfer call by doing something no one has this season

One Premier League star has responded to a call for Manchester United to sign him by achieving a feat on Sunday afternoon that no other player has his season against Chelsea.

Manchester United brought in André Onana from Inter during the summer of 2023 following David de Gea’s departure.

Having previously worked with Onana at Ajax, Erik ten Hag was keen to reunite with the goalkeeper at Old Trafford.

Onana’s first season at the club was a mixed bag. While he was largely dependable in the Premier League, it could be argued that his performances in the Champions League played a major role in United’s early exit.

The 28-year-old appeared to have turned a corner towards the end of last season and the start of this one.

However, errors have started creeping back into his game, often the same recurring issues—such as struggling to parry shots away from danger.

United called to secure Onana replacement

Speaking recently, former United defender Paul Parker called for United to take a look at Leicester City goalkeeper Mads Hermansen to replace Onana, citing the 24-year-old’s brilliant form despite the struggles of Ruud van Nistelrooy’s team as a positive sign.

“In an ideal world, Man United should buy a new goalkeeper to replace Onana,” Parker said. “He’s just not good enough, and I don’t think he even looks like a goalkeeper at all.”

“Right now, I think [Altay] Bayındır should get a chance, but in the long run, the club should go for Mads Hermansen, who has single-handedly kept Leicester somewhat afloat this season.

“I think he has it all. He’s a fantastic shot-stopper, he’s good with his feet, and he has a strong attitude. As a centre-back, I would be scared to have him behind me, but in a good way, because he has such a strong aura.

“The problem is probably that the goalkeeper position won’t be a priority for a new signing, as there are so many other issues in other positions that need strengthening.”

Hermansen responds to United transfer call

With pressure continuing to grow on Onana (Arsenal game), Hermansen pulled off a stunning save to deny Cole Palmer against Chelsea on Sunday afternoon.

The Chelsea talisman had not scored in his last eight appearances as he lined up against Leicester at Stamford Bridge, but many Chelsea fans hoped this duck would break as he stepped up to convert a penalty following a foul against Jadon Sancho in the first half.

However, with Palmer having netted every penalty handed to him this season, the ex-Manchester City player saw his effort denied after Hermansen dived brilliantly to his left, becoming the first and only goalkeeper to save a penalty taken by Palmer this season.

It is the first penalty miss of Palmer’s career for the Blues, having converted his previous 12, and in light of Parker’s call for United to sign him, the save will do plenty to alert the club’s scouts. Amorim is said to want a new goalkeeper this summer.

Chelsea would go on to open the scoring in the second half, with Marc Cucurella striking home on the hour mark, with this goal ending as the winning effort, but Hermansen had a great invidious display at Stamford Bridge.

The Danish international shot-stopper made seven saves, including the penalty and denying Enzo Fernandez a last-minute finish, while making eight recoveries and accruing 55 touches throughout the display.

With Leicester looking likely to head back to the Championship through relegation this summer, United may look to strike a value-for-money deal to bring the 24-year-old ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
