Rúben Amorim could be about to break a 47-year transfer record at Manchester United by selling a star who wants to stay at Old Trafford this summer.

It is no secret that Rúben Amorim will need a huge overhaul of players if he is to succeed at Manchester United after years of subpar recruitment and spending.

The Old Trafford club have been criticised for a number of transfers they have sanctioned over the years, with the signings of Mason Mount for £50 million, Antony for £85 million, and Casemiro for £60 million across the last three seasons of particular bemusement to fans.

All of these signings were made under former manager Erik ten Hag, but many of the players in the squad Amorim inherited do not fit the 3-4-3 system the new head coach wants to play.

Therefore, the club are looking at bringing in new players in a whole host of positions such as striker, midfield, defenders, and goalkeeper.

Amorim wants to replace Onana

According to a new report from the Manchester Evening News, Amorim is looking to replace André Onana as the club’s goalkeeper after being left unimpressed with the Cameroon international.

Onana has made a string of errors in the Premier League this season that have contributed to the club’s 14th position in the table, and throughout his 86 appearances for United, his future at the club has been questioned, with some branding his recent performances as “atrocious”.

The report states that Onana wants to stay at Old Trafford, and he considers United the only club he wants to play for, but he may not have a say in this should Amorim look to replace him.

Regardless of Onana’s future, it’s expected that United will sign a new goalkeeper, as third-choice Tom Heaton’s contract expires at the end of this campaign and second chose Altay Bayındır may depart to become a No. 1 elsewhere.

Onana’s sale would break 47-year record

Should United sell Onana this summer, the above report points out that the fee would have to be more than £28.32 million, which is the remaining cost of his initial £47.2 million transfer fee from Inter Milan spread out over the final three years of his contract.

This would be to avoid his sale going down as a loss on the club’s profit and sustainability balance sheet.

However, the more interesting statistic is that, should Onana be sold, he would become the first first-choice goalkeeper United have sold since Alex Stepney in 1978, who played for the club for 12 seasons.

This would mean Amorim’s choice to sell Onana would be the first in 47 years. United parted ways with David de Gea to bring Onana in, but the club just allowed the Spaniard’s contract to expire.
