Roy Keane admits he’s “not convinced” by Erik ten Hag signing, he’s made 88 Manchester United appearances

Roy Keane has admitted that he is still unconvinced by one of Erik ten Hag’s signings despite the player having made 88 appearances for Manchester United so far.

Erik ten Hag’s time at Manchester United was marred with criticism and trophies, with the Dutch manager winning two cups in his two full seasons at the club.

However, he was sacked a few months into his third season after leaving the club 14th in the table despite spending around £200 million in the 2024 summer window and signing five new players.

United invested a lot of money into Ten Hag’s tenure at the club, spending over £600 million on 21 first-team players either as permanent transfers or loans, with the majority of Rúben Amorim’s current squad being made up of said players.

However, many of these signings have brought criticism. While the most recent summer window saw United sign Noussair Mazraoui, Leny Yoro, and Matthijs de Ligt, who are thought to be key parts of Amorim’s long-term squad, many others have failed to impress.

Keane still not convinced by one player

Speaking on Sky Sports ahead of United’s Premier League clash against Arsenal, former United captain Roy Keane admitted that he is still unconvinced by 2023 summer signing André Onana in goal.

“[The club’s problems have] been well-documented,” Keane said. “The problems, there’s been no real reaction to the new manager coming in. Results haven’t been great. A few injuries.

“They don’t look like they’ve got many goals in them. Not great at set pieces. They don’t look very dynamic. Still not convinced with the goalkeeper.

“We keep discussing this every time we focus on United. So many problems. But they have to try and get some belief, confidence back into the group. Find something from within the dressing room.”

Keane’s admission is worrying

If a summer signing takes a few months to convince fans of their abilities, this is not a huge problem – Joshua Zirkzee and Manuel Ugarte have both had to go through this process this season, with the majority of fans now liking the pair despite rough starts.

However, Keane’s admission is one that many United fans will resonate with, as despite Onana having made 88 appearances for United in his season and a half at the club, many are still questioning his abilities.

Onana is a vocal leader inside United’s dressing room and is clearly an incredibly popular figure among players, but he has made a whole host of errors since he joined in 2023 that have led many to think he will not survive at United.

Ten Hag brought Onana in to change United’s style of play once David de Gea departed Old Trafford, but if reports are to believed, Amorim already wants to sign a new goalkeeper this summer.

Although Onana may reach 100 appearances for the club before the season ends, he may be counting down the days until United choose to cash in.
