The Premier League have confirmed who will officiate Manchester Untied vs Liverpool as painful memories return for Erik ten Hag.

Manchester United are set to face Liverpool at Old Trafford in their third Premier League match of the 2024/25 season.

Erik ten Hag’s side have experienced a mixed start, with a 1-0 victory over Fulham followed by a narrow 2-1 defeat to Brighton in the final moments. Despite the results, United have shown signs of being more cohesive and structured compared to last season.

Liverpool, on the other hand, have begun the season strongly under new manager Arne Slot, winning their first two matches 2-0 against Ipswich Town and Brentford. Slot will be eager to make a statement by securing a significant result at Old Trafford.

Ahead of the game, the Premier League have confirmed who will be officiating the tie.

Match referees

Anthony Taylor (pictured below) will referee on Saturday at the Amex Stadium. Taylor officiated three Manchester United fixtures last season, the first of which was a 3-1 loss against Arsenal in the Premier League at the Emirates Stadium.

That game is a particularly painful memory for United fans. Alejandro Garnacho had a winning goal ruled out for offside just moments before Arsenal went up the other end to score two goals in stoppage time. Ten Hag has pointed to it many times as a tipping point in the 2023/24 season for United.

The other fixtures Taylor officiated were a 2-0 win over Wigan in the FA Cup third round. Goals from Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes secured the club’s first of six wins, which would see them lift the competition’s 2024 trophy.

He also refereed the same Old Trafford tie last season, in which goals from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo secured a 2-2 draw against Liverpool.

Gary Beswick and Adam Nunn will be on the sidelines, acting as Taylor’s assistant referees during the game. Sam Barrott has been handed the fourth official job, separating Erik ten Hag and new Seagulls boss Fabian Hürzeler on Saturday afternoon.

John Brooks has been appointed as the video assistant referee. Harry Lennard will act as assistant VAR.
