Only Manchester United’s Kobbie Mainoo would get into Liverpool’s current XI from Erik ten Hag’s squad, claims former Premier League striker John Barnes.

Kobbie Mainoo has been an absolute revelation for Erik ten Hag and Manchester United this season. The 18-year-old forced his way into United’s squad following his first start for the club against Everton in December.

Mainoo has established himself as one of the first names on the United teamsheet since the end of 2023. He has played 21 times since his return from injury, forming a good partnership with Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes in midfield.

Mainoo earned himself a lot of plaudits during United’s 4-3 win over Liverpool in the FA Cup a few weeks ago, earning himself a last-minute call-up to the England squad.

John Barnes, the former Premier League and Liverpool striker, believes that out of the two squads, only Kobbie Mainoo is good enough to get into the Liverpool team.

“Mainoo is a young player, and young players want to play,” Barnes told Bonuscodebets. “I’m sure he wants to play every game.

‘He’s been fantastic since he broke into the United team and in difficult circumstances because he’s not playing in a team that’s playing consistently well.

“The United situation would normally be a tough one for young players to show how good they are but he’s impressed me every time he’s played. He’d had a great attitude and been one of United’s better players and has been one of their most consistent if not their most consistent player.”

“He does a lot of work in midfield. Defending, holding onto the ball, driving forward, passing forward. He’s handled the pressure well.”

Barnes’ combined Manchester United and Liverpool XI: Kelleher, Robertson, Quansah, Van Dijk, Bradley, Mac Allister, Mainoo, Szoboszlai, Salah, Nunez, Diaz.
