An ex-defender has praised one of Manchester United’s recent standout performers ahead of the club’s fixture against Tottenham Hotspur.

This season, Manchester United have managed to secure just two victories from their first five Premier League matches, along with a draw in their opening Europa League game.

After wins over Southampton and Fulham, the team drew with Crystal Palace and faced defeats against Brighton and Liverpool. In their Europa League opener, they drew with FC Twente.

Their standout performance so far was a dominant 7-0 win against Barnsley in the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford two weeks ago.

However, one standout performer is Christian Eriksen, who started United’s last four games and scored three times, although he was admittedly at fault for FC Twente’s equalising goal at Old Trafford.

Following United’s midweek draw, Paul Parker praised Eriksen for his renaissance in the last few weeks, explaining that it’s “absolutely crazy” that there was talk of him leaving Old Trafford earlier this summer.

“Eriksen has proved everyone wrong,” he told BetFred. “It’s absolutely crazy because, not long ago, we were talking about how he should start looking for a new club.

“It seemed like his options were at the level of Ajax, Galatasaray, or maybe a return to Denmark. It doesn’t make any sense to me that he’s suddenly a regular starter, at least for now.”

“It’ll be interesting, of course, to see if Ugarte comes in and takes his spot, but why would they drop him? Sure, there are mistakes here and there, but that’s football. Right now, he’s crucial for Manchester United.”

“He’s crucial because he helps the team be more dominant than they have been otherwise. They hadn’t been in control at all until Eriksen came in and started dictating the game. In many ways, he is what people said United needed to go out and buy in the transfer market.”

Next up, United will face Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford as they look to rejuvenate their Premier League form under Ten Hag.
