Manchester United are planning on signing a striker this summer to support Rasmus Højlund with the goals.

Højlund, 21, scored 16 goals last term in what was a respectable debut campaign for United, especially considering the circumstances of the campaign.

The Reds delivered their worst Premier League season since its inception in 1992 and struggled to dominate games and create chances for their forward players.

Despite having struggled with injury at the beginning of his United career, Højlund was the only recognised no.9 at the club from December onwards after Anthony Martial had surgery on his groin.

While there were many signs that Højlund could become a top-class striker, finding support for the 21-year-old has quickly become one of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s main priorities in the summer transfer window.

According to ESPN, the Old Trafford club has drawn up a list of striker targets, which includes Brentford star Ivan Toney, Jonathan David of Lille and Dutch goalscorer Joshua Zirkzee.

It was added that Toney and David are of particular interest due to their current contract situations. They are both entering the final year of their deals at their respective clubs.

Despite this, the report explained that Brentford will still demand more than £50 million for the English striker, who is with Gareth Southgate’s squad in Germany ahead of Euro 2024.

The club are also keen to bolster their defensive line, with two centre-backs being reported as a priority as well as a potential left-back addition. Central midfield could be another area for improvement, with links to the likes of Benfica starlet Joao Neves arising in recent weeks.

In order to fulfil their summer targets, United will need to focus on exits. Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood are both available for transfer. Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Omari Forson has left the club to join Serie A club AC Monza on a four-year deal.

The Reds will receive a compensation fee in return for the youngster who joined the club in 2019. He made seven appearances for United after making his debut against Wigan Athletic in the FA Cup last season.
