Man United starlet receives huge pre-season boost after shirt number upgrade
Manchester United starlet Harry Amass has received a huge boost as pre-season begins after receiving a shirt number upgrade.
Amass, 17, joined the club at the beginning of last season after transferring from Championship club Watford.
He had made the bench for The Hornets’ first team at just 15 years of age for an FA Cup third-round clash against Reading.
After initially impressing with United’s under-18s side at Carrington last term, the young left-back began regularly training with Erik ten Hag’s squad and would end up making the bench for seven first-team fixtures.
Compared stylistically to Luke Shaw, Amass will be hoping to have another strong campaign in 2024/25, with United’s left-back situation being complicated.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Dutch left-back Tyrell Malacia is still continuing his recovery from his knee surgery last season.
He is not with the first-team training and there is no timeframe as to when he will return to the pitch.
While this is an unfortunate blow for the 24-year-old, it provides an exciting opportunity for 17-year-old Amass ahead of a busy pre-season schedule.
Shaw remains at Euro 2024 with England and will be entitled to a holiday when he returns. That leaves Amass as the most recognised option for Ten Hag to use at left-back in these warm-up games.
It remains to be seen whether signings are made in the position in the coming months, but Amass could well make a similar impression to the one Kobbie Mainoo made in the United States last summer before he broke into the team.
