Luke Shaw sends Gareth Southgate clear message about Wout Weghorst ahead of Euro 2024 semi-final
Luke Shaw has sent Gareth Southgate a clear message about former Manchester United teammate Wout Weghorst ahead of the Euro 2024 semi-final between England and the Netherlands.
Shaw, 28, worked with Weghorst at United and will face the striker on Wednesday evening in a crucial clash between the two nations.
The United defender returned to action in the last round to help Gareth Southgate’s men win against Switzerland and has admitted that Weghorst could have an impact for the opposition.
Shaw even stated that he’s willing to give Southgate and his staff further information and background on his former teammate as they prepare for the game.
Weghorst, 31, spent the second half of the 2022/23 campaign on loan at United. The Dutch striker helped the team to a third-place Premier League finish and Carabao Cup victory.
Currently with the Dutch national team at the European Championships in Germany, the centre-forward has played an important role off the bench for Ronald Koeman’s side.
They progressed through a group with Poland, France and Austria – with Weghorst scoring the decisive goal in their only group victory.
He also came off the bench in both of their knockout wins against Romania and Turkey.
“Yeah, of course, he’s a very strong opponent in and around the box. Duels in the air he’s really strong, he’s a hard worker,” said Shaw when asked about his former teammate.
“He’s obviously not been starting at the moment but he’s been coming on and making a real impact and that’s something we’ll look at.
“If Gareth or the team want anything from him from me, then I’m happy to help with that, but we’re expecting a tough test not just from him but from the whole team.”
