Marcus Rashford is getting ever closer to putting pen to paper on a new 5-year contract at Manchester United amid his brilliant form under Erik ten Hag.

Marcus Rashford has scored 23 goals so far this campaign, making 2022/23 his best scoring season in all competitions, and a lot of this is down to the importance in the Manchester United side that Erik ten Hag has placed on Rashford’s role.

This importance was recently demonstrated by Bruno Fernandes in an interview after United’s 3-0 victory over Leicester City.

“It’s unbelievable for us, we want him to enjoy his moment, carry on, he’s a big part for us,” Bruno Fernandes told MUTV after Rashford’s double against Leicester. “Amazing. Even sometimes when you can think he’s a little bit out of the game, he can make his runs, go in behind, outrun people and score.

“We have to enjoy his moment and make sure he carries on this (good run of form). We just have to serve him.”

With Ten Hag keen to tie Rashford down to a long-term contract, David Ornstein of the Athletic has confirmed that United’s current takeover situation will not be a barrier to the two parties coming to an agreement on terms.

It had been speculated previously that one reason why Rashford’s contract negotiations had taken so long is that the club were reluctant to hand out new contracts to any players while there was a potential change in ownership much like what had happened at Chelsea – however that is not the case.

This is the perfect decision for Manchester United to make in relation to what’s best for the club, because Rashford has become way to valuable for United to delay him signing a new contract. With less than 18 months left on his current deal, the club will not want it to become a race against time in securing his new signature.

Erik ten Hag has already commented on Rashford’s contract talks, telling Sky Sports that “It’s a priority. In the background we are working hard.”

Ornstein confirms that initial talks for Rashford’s contract have already taken place and that more are scheduled, with the club having already prepared their finances in relation to new contracts as well as a summer budget for new recruits.

Marcus Rashford himself spoke to media after the Leicester fixture, assessing Manchester United’s title chances as they currently sit three points off Manchester City in second and just five off Premier League leaders Arsenal.

“Obviously we are there, we are close,” he said. “At the same time, both teams in front of us are really good teams and they are playing good football at the minute as well.”

Rashford also commented that he doesn’t feel like slowing down and wants to keep improving and scoring more goals – which will no doubt be music to the ears of Manchester United fans.
