Man United must act on double transfer move after latest Kobbie Mainoo decision
Manchester United should act quickly on their double transfer priority after the latest decision concerning Kobbie Mainoo.
Gareth Southgate has suggested that Mainoo could start in the midfield at Euro 2024 after complimenting his ability defensively as England are without the aerially dominant Harry Maguire.
“Harry Maguire’s consistently been one of our main first contact from set-plays but we have got other options within that, but we have got other opportunities to be creative in our set-plays as well,” explained the Three Lions boss.
“But some smaller players can cope really well and mark really well. You saw Kobbie Mainoo doing a pretty good job from corners for Manchester United in the FA Cup final, for example.”
Should Mainoo start for England and they have a deep run into the tournament, he would have minimal time to recover before the 2024/25 campaign begins.
United are planning to boost their midfield depth with two signings this summer, with the likes of Joao Neves and Morten Hjulmand linked with Old Trafford moves.
With Mainoo’s potential involvement as a regular starter at Euro 2024, INEOS must ensure that they make these moves as quickly as possible.
Raphaël Varane has already warned Mainoo about keeping himself fully fit away from the pitch, but United cannot allow themselves to become dependent on the young midfielder like they were last season.
Mainoo started 29 out of his 33 appearances between November and May; and fans were regularly upset whenever he was brought out of games early.
Additional signings in the midfield will allow Erik ten Hag – or another manager if the Dutchman is replaced – to be eased into action next term and also afford him potential rest time without the quality immensely dropping in the team.
