Harry Maguire has issued a statement following the news that he will not be in England’s 2024 European Championship squad, explaining his next steps with Manchester United.

Harry Maguire is one of seven players who will miss out on England‘s 26-man squad for the 2024 European Championship, which will be held in Germany and kicks off this month.

The Manchester United defender, who has performed well under Erik ten Hag this season, will be joined on the sidelines by Jack Grealish, James Maddison, Jarrad Branthwaite, James Trafford, Curtis Jones and Jarrell Quansah, who have all been kicked from England’s 33-man provisional squad by Gareth Southgate.

Maguire has been a trusted ally of Southgate across the last five years but an injury towards the end of last campaign has left the United defender unable to regain fitness ahead of the tournament.

From United, Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo have both been selected to board the flight to mainland Europe this summer. In a full statement, Maguire has issued his thoughts on the decision.

“I am devastated not to have been selected to play for England at the Euros this summer,” he started.

“Despite my best efforts, I have not been able to overcome an injury to my calf. Maybe I pushed myself too hard, to try and make it. Simply, I am absolutely gutted.

“For me, representing England is the highest honour. It means everything to me. If I can’t help the team as a player, I will support them as a fan – along with the rest of the country. Go and win it boys.”

At the end of the statement, Maguire also confirmed that he will now return to Manchester United and their medial team, and that the club will take charge of preparing him for next season.

“Next, I will return to the supervision of the Manchester United medical team in order to prepare for next season.”

United are set to start their pre-season tour on Monday, 15 July, against Norwegian side Rosenborg at the Lerkendal Stadion in Trondheim, Norway.
