Man United receive double transfer boost after Premier League director’s admission

Manchester United have received a double transfer boost after a Premier League club director admitted that they will have to sell players this summer.

The Reds will likely be busy in the upcoming transfer window in terms of incomings and outgoings.

According to reports, Sir Jim Ratcliffe and INEOS are open to considering offers for the majority of the playing squad at Old Trafford.

However, several positions at United need attention, with the centre of defence perhaps being the most urgent.

Another role that needs additions is the midfield, with Casemiro and Christian Eriksen likely to leave or have further demoted roles next term.

Interestingly, United hold interest in Jarrad Branthwaite and Amadou Onana from Everton, two players who would bolster both of those positions.

Unfortunately, it seems unlikely that United could secure both signings with the fees mentioned; however, the latest comments from Kevin Thelwell, the Merseyside club’s director of football, suggest that there is a chance.

Everton must sell

Everton director of football Kevin Thelwell has admitted that “players will be sold” at Everton this summer.

“That may not be exciting to hear, but under our current circumstances, it is the right thing for Everton,” he told club media.

“I understand that, as with every transfer window, there is a great deal of anticipation around what business may be done.

“Whilst I cannot go into details, I have been working closely with Sean and our key staff here at Finch Farm, utilising data and insight from our recruitment team, planning for the summer window.

“As is always the case, there must be multiple plans and strategies in play, and a dynamic approach to planning is key.

“It is also important that I am completely candid with you. The reality is, given the regulations in place and the Club’s current financial position, we have to trade well.

“Working within such tight financial parameters makes the job extremely difficult. Whilst we want to ensure the team is as competitive as possible, we cannot lose sight of our central objective to protect the long-term stability of the Club.

“That does mean players will be sold, and also that every tool at our disposal will be used to secure new additions to the squad, including utilisation of the loan market.”

United must attempt a double swoop

Even if United do not land both Branthwaite and Onana, they must be in the conversation for both players, and attempt to try and sign at least one.

Clubs will know that Everton need to sell and it’s possible that their transfer fees will be lowered because of that.

Both players are Premier League-proven and would improve United’s squad.
