Latest team news: Manchester United vs West Ham (FA Cup)
After winning the Carabao Cup on Sunday afternoon, Manchester United will face West Ham United at Old Trafford on Wednesday in the fifth round of the FA Cup in an effort to get closer to a shot at another trophy.
By winning the Carabao Cup at Wembley over the weekend, Erik ten Hag‘s men brought to an end the club’s longest trophy drought in more than 40 years. Fans are hoping that this momentous victory can serve as a catalyst for significant honours beyond.
Goals from Casemiro and Marcus Rashford helped the Red Devils overcome Newcastle United and end United’s six-year trophy drought.
West Ham, who are having trouble in the Premier League under David Moyes’ leadership, pose a threat to United’s advancement in the fifth round of the FA Cup.
Manchester United team news
In terms of United’s team news, only Donny van de Beek and Christian Eriksen are certainties to be ruled out, while Anthony Martial is a question mark after missing Sunday’s Carabao Cup final – although the chances of his availability are slim. Eriksen indicated he should be free of his protective boot soon.
Marcus Rashford demonstrated his fitness at Wembley with another solid performance and the second goal, showing no signs of the knock he sustained against Barcelona.
Luke Shaw and Fred, who both started each of the club’s eight games in February, will need to be watched closely because it is uncertain whether they will play after Ten Hag confirmed minor injury concerns after the Wembley outing last weekend.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka replaced Diogo Dalot at right-back in the second half of the fixture, but Dalot seems back to full fitness after a period of injury at the start of this year as it looked like a change that was made to neutralise the threat of Allan Saint-Maximin.
After being left off the bench over the weekend, Anthony Elanga, Kobbie Mainoo, Zidane Iqbal, and Brandon Williams are in the running to make the team as they trained at Carrington on Monday.
West Ham United team news
Vladimir Coufal (heel) and Lukasz Fabianski (fractured cheekbone and eye socket) are both unavailable as they injured themselves in last week’s win over Nottingham Forest. They are both expected to miss the game on Wednesday.
Kurt Zouma and Maxwel Cornet have resumed training after absences due to thigh and calf issues, respectively. Moyes will be hoping the pair can quickly be reintegrated into the first squad.
Ben Johnson will presumably go to right back in Coufal’s absence, and either Emerson Palmieri or Aaron Cresswell will likely be recalled to play on the other side of the defence. Alphonse Areola will likely start in goal regardless of whether Fabianski is available.
Following his goal as a replacement at the weekend, Michail Antonio is expected to be returned to the forward line with Danny Ings cup-tied after featuring for Aston Villa in the earlier rounds of the competition.
