Manchester United are looking to keep Kobbie Mainoo at the club, even though he was close to a loan exit under Rúben Amorim.
Kobbie Mainoo is one of the most beloved Manchester United players in recent years, especially given his newfound starting role in Michael Carrick’s starting lineup.
Before the win against Tottenham Hotspur, Mainoo had played every minute since Carrick replaced Darren Fletcher, who, in turn, took charge after Rúben Amorim’s departure.
Tyler Fletcher was brought on for the final minutes, but Mainoo was back in the side from the start against West Ham United in United’s last game.
Mainoo will be crucial for Carrick until the end of the season, as there is no other playmaking midfielder who can play in the deeper midfield. Bruno Fernandes did under Amorim, but he has returned to his natural No.10 position under Carrick.
Mainoo was looking to leave United in the January transfer window, with several clubs looking at signing him on loan, but United blocked the move, so he could sit on the bench for Amorim. Thankfully for Mainoo, that chapter is now over.
Mainoo’s stance on United stay
While Amorim was in charge, Mainoo wanted to leave the club, but only on a loan deal. In truth, Mainoo never wanted to leave his boyhood club, as Chris Wheeler of The Daily Mail has now revealed.
Speaking on The United Stand, Wheeler claimed that United and Mainoo still need to come to an agreement over a new contract, but the situation at the club is said to have “improved significantly” without Amorim at the club.
Despite his January feelings, Mainoo is said to be “keen” on staying at the club, and United are “equally eager” to keep him at Old Trafford.
A deal is expected to be completed, as both sides want it to proceed. Mainoo should be a United player next season, and beyond.
Mainoo will be crucial for Carrick
In his short time back in the Manchester United dugout, Michael Carrick has already shown how much faith he holds in Kobbie Mainoo, and rightly so. He is an unbelievable talent.
Mainoo is the only player in the United squad who can play in his current role. Mason Mount briefly played in a similar position under Erik ten Hag, but he will be more of a No.10 or left-winger until the end of the season.

Mainoo is not just the only player who can play in that role; he is also exceptional at it. He has already played a part in several goals under Carrick by roaming from his position and linking play with quick passes.
Every United fan is happy to see Mainoo back playing, and he appears to be happy to be back, too. A new contract seems inevitable.
