John O’Shea defends “outstanding” Man United player after criticised Chelsea display
Former Manchester United defender John O’Shea has defended one ‘outstanding’ player after he was criticised for his display against Chelsea.
Manchester United secured a point in their home clash against Chelsea on Sunday evening, despite taking the lead with 20 minutes remaining.
Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty after Rasmus Højlund drew the foul, but Chelsea responded with an equaliser just five minutes later.
United remain in 13th place, recording their worst start to a Premier League season after 10 games with just 12 points so far.
Nevertheless, Ruud van Nistelrooy might find some positives in the outcome, given Chelsea’s strong form this season and United’s recent struggles.
O’Shea defends outstanding Garnacho
However, one player who did not cover himself in glory during the game was Alejandro Garnacho, who had a disappointing display against The Blues.
After missing an obvious pass to Amad Diallo in the final moments of the game, the Argentine winger has been criticised online but former United defender John O’Shea has come to his defence.
O’Shea believes that Garnacho is stepping up more than anyone when the team needs it. He has six goals and four assists so far this term.
“He’s an outstanding talent,” the ex-Northern Ireland international said during MUTV’s coverage of the game.
“The goals he’s got, he’s stepped up to the plate when the team has really needed him. He does get smashed, he is willing to stand up to it, and he’s been a real shining light.”
This was an opinion echoed by fellow MUTV pundit and former United defender David May, who also praised the winger for reaching over 100 appearances for the club at just 20 years of age.
He added: “It is phenomenal, considering his age. He has an abundance of pace and he will score goals.
“If he gets kicked, he will run at them again. He will always give 100 per cent. He’s a massive part of this club going forward.”
