Manchester United have been strongly linked with Jarrad Branthwaite, but Liverpool legend John Barnes thinks it may be too early for the young Englishman.

Branthwaite has been rumoured to be a top transfer target for Erik ten Hag, with the centre-back reportedly part of a four-man shortlist set up by INEOS.

However, Barnes doesn’t think now is the time for Branthwaite to move away from Everton.

Speaking to BonusCodeBets, Barnes said: “It’s too early for there to be rumours linking Branthwaite to United.”

“He’s playing in a team that has been conceding goals and haven’t been winning.”

The centre-back has played 18 Premier League matches so far this season for Sean Dyche’s side, keeping seven clean sheets in this time.

For this reason, Barnes thinks that it is best for the young Englishman to stay where he is and continue to improve.

He said: “Let him develop, let him grow. I think he’s a good player, but I don’t think he’s set the world alight with his performances

“He’s one for the future and has good potential, but I haven’t seen in his performances that he’s ready for Manchester United.”
