“It’s the next step” – Erik ten Hag sets new goalscoring target for Marcus Rashford
Erik ten Hag is pushing Marcus Rashford to extend his goalscoring talents after scoring 30 for Manchester United this season.
Rashford, 26, is the first player at Old Trafford to reach that tally in a single campaign since Robin van Persie in 2012/13.
His electric form following the World Cup spearheaded his tally, scoring 19 in the 22 games after the tournament.
Whilst he’s only bagged three in his last 11 appearances, Rashford secured the thirtieth during United’s 4-1 win against Chelsea on Thursday.
Ten Hag has been key in the turnaround for the Englishman. Rashford was void of confidence last term as he scored just five across the entire campaign.
Despite his constant backing of United’s no.10, the Dutchman is keen to see him develop his game further after a recent rough patch in his goalscoring form.
“Yes. There’s a lot of room for improvement in his game,” said Ten Hag of the winger. “I’m convinced he could score even more. For instance, in the last 10 games, he didn’t score so many, only two or three. So yeah, he can improve.
“But I’m happy with where he [Rashford] was last season [compared to] what he did now. He’s brought himself back, we supported him where we could – in the way of play but also in his mindset. We’re happy with that but we have to push for more.”
Rashford has now scored 20 or more goals in three different seasons – with this term being the first time he’s reached the 30 mark. But the United boss believes the winger should be setting a higher bar next season.
“I’m sure he is capable to score 40 goals in a season,” he added. “For him, it’s the next step.”
