Despite much public criticism this term, Jadon Sancho has received major backing from Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag.

The 23-year-old winger has six goals and three assists this term, which is not an incredible return, and there remain questions about his long-term future at Old Trafford.

Sancho’s troubles from his debut campaign have continued under Ten Hag – an extended outlay due to ‘physical and mental’ problems did not help – but the wide man also has shown promise that he could turn things around at the club.

Sancho produced one of his best displays in a United shirt, creating countless chances for his teammates throughout. He spent most of the game on the right wing after Antony was forced off due to injury.

Those signs most recently came in United’s 4-1 win against Chelsea, where Sancho assisted once as The Reds secured their place in the Champions League next season.

Ten Hag’s assessment of the winger is much different to the public opinion, as he says that there has been solid progress in the Englishman’s game.

“He did very well on the right side, and I think he played a very good game today,” said Ten Hag after the game. “And I think Jadon Sancho was one of the players who [has made good] progress in this season.

“And there were many players in our squad who made good progress. I think it’s a good base to build further on.”

Further developing on the forward, Ten Hag believes that Sancho is able to operate on both flanks to a high level.

“He can do both, but I think he prefers to play on the left,” added Ten Hag. “But we have seen today he is very good on the right as well.”
