Roy Keane has called for Manchester United to let David de Gea leave the club in the summer despite winning the Premier League Golden Glove this term.

The Reds ended their league campaign with a 2-1 victory against Fulham in which De Gea saved a penalty.

Jadon Sancho and Bruno Fernandes got the goals that secured a third-place finish in the Premier League.

However, former United captain Keane does not believe that The Reds should move forward with the Spaniard in goal.

Despite having the most clean sheets in the top flight, there is also no other Premier Leagye player in all competitions with more mistakes leading to goals than De Gea since the start last season.

Keane believes that improvements were bound to happen after last term, which was statistically United’s worst performing season in Premier League history.

“United had to improve from last year, they were so bad defensively,” stated Keane on Sky Sports after the final day.

“De Gea, they’re patting him on the back there,” he continued when images of United players congratulating De Gea on his Golden Glove award were shown. “I’d move him on quickly, he’s not for me, he’s not going to get Man United back winning trophies, absolutely not.

“This idea of everybody patting him on the head, it’s just ridiculous. That’s his job.”

De Gea is reportedly close to signing a contract extension at Old Trafford – with his current deal set to expire at the end of next month.

The Reds are also keen to sign a goalkeeper to challenge the 32-year-old. However, Keane does not believe De Gea would remain at the club without being the outright number one.

“You wouldn’t keep him as a number two,” continued Keane. “He’s been number one at United for 10 years, he wouldn’t stay on to be [backup].”

Finally, the ex-Reds midfielder stated that De Gea has not been a great for the club in the past, despite many arguments that he was one of the best shot stoppers in world football for a number of years.

“I don’t think so, he’s been OK,” replied Keane when Micah Richards stated the goalkeeper had great prior seasons.

“What big deal is that?” He continued when Richards mentioned his Player of the Year awards. “It’s about what the team is achieving and he’s made far too many mistakes over the last few years.”
