Manchester United have been advised not to replace David de Gea this summer transfer window by one of their former title-winning defenders.

With much being made about the plan Erik ten Hag has for Manchester United long term, David de Gea may be the single most divisive talking point.

Many argue that the Spanish goalkeeper is not up to the standards that Ten Hag needs in order for his side to play a more proactive form of football, while others point towards his brilliant clean sheet record this season.

David de Gea currently holds 15 clean sheets to his name in the Premier League this season, leading the Golden Glove race by two ahead of Newcastle United‘s Nick Pope in second.

Mikael Silvestre has explained that De Gea should be given a chance to “bounce back” due to his ability and the general performances he has shown this season.

When asked if Manchester United should look to replace David de Gea by bettingexpert.com, Silvestre’s response was to the point: “No.”

“David always finds a way to bounce back so I’m not concerned about his ability,” he further explained as to why he should not be replaced.

“His general performances show he still has the ability to play for Manchester United and be the number one choice.

“I think if you look at all the goalkeepers in the league and in the top six they’ve all had a difficult time and difficult games.”

David de Gea has made a mammoth 538 appearances for Manchester United throughout his career at the club, conceding a total of 584 goals and keeping 188 clean sheets in the process – a record at the club.

He recently broke this record, previously held by Peter Schmeichel, in February during Manchester United’s Carabao Cup final victory over Newcastle United.

“I’m happy,” he told MUTV after the fixture. “It was the perfect way to do it, in the final. To break the record is something amazing, so I’m really proud so let’s keep going and try to keep more clean sheets.”
