“I fear Ruben Amorim wants him…” – Club icon concerned about potential Man United transfer
One club icon has admitted that he ‘fears’ Ruben Amorim will want a star player at Manchester United as a key transfer.
Manchester United announced last week that Ruben Amorim will replace Erik ten Hag, who was recently dismissed.
The Portuguese manager will stay with Sporting Lisbon for their final two matches before the international break and will then head to Manchester to take up his new position on 11 November.
In the meantime, Ruud van Nistelrooy is in interim charge of the Reds and has two more games in charge after winning against Leicester City and drawing to Chelsea.
Once Amorim is set up at Old Trafford, he will want to start implementing his 3-4-3 formation during the international break.
The head coach will certainly be wondering who will be the best option to occupy his left-wingback role in the starting team.
Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, the two recognised left-backs in the squad, are both potential injury concerns even if they are scheduled to return to action soon.
Someone like Alejandro Garnacho may be used in the role considering the wingbacks are very offensive, but Amorim could also be keen to recruit in the position.
United have already been linked with re-signing Alvaro Fernandez, who joined Benfica in the summer on a permanent transfer.
The Reds have a buyback clause for around £16 million inserted in the defender’s contract and Ten Hag confirmed last month that he was still being monitored.
Now, with United moving to a system with wingbacks–a position that Fernandez is familiar with–there is a belief that United could snatch their former Academy player back.
Ex-Benfica defender Álvaro Magalhães says that he ‘fears’ Amorim will be looking to bring the ‘quality’ Fernandez back to the club.
I fear that Rúben Amorim wants him at Manchester United,” Magalhães admitted during an interview with Record.
“It seems to me that he has the quality to be one of the first options and looking at the squad, I believe that with the new coaching staff he could become a possibility again, especially because the new coach knows him very well based on what he saw from him at Benfica.
“It would be a lot if Benfica had the ability to not let him escape, but now the decision is not just in the club’s hands.”
Speaking further on Fernandez, the former Benfica player explained that his mental strength can help him in his career going forward.
“This ability to react to adversity seems to be his strength,” added Magalhães. “Great players only succeed if they are mentally very strong and that seems to be the case.
“Anyone who is weak cannot play for Benfica, just as they cannot play for Real Madrid, Manchester United, Bayern Munich, or PSG.”
