Harry Amass “definitely” not returning to Sheffield Wednesday as next Championship club revealed

Harry Amass spent the first half of the season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, but will not return there for the second half of the campaign.

Harry Amass joined Manchester United from Watford in June 2023, playing a key role for the under-18s in his first season before making the step up to the under-21s.

Last season, Rúben Amorim featured Amass in the Premier League against Leicester City and others before including him in the Europa League. The left-back even played in the monumental Europa League quarter-final against Lyon.

Despite this, he was left out of the pre-season tour squad, with Diego Leon taking his place. Leon has spent this year with the under-21s as he acclimatises to life in Manchester, while Amass was forced out on loan.

Sheffield Wednesday jumped at the chance to sign Amass amid their financial difficulties, but could only secure a six-month deal. Amass has now returned to Old Trafford, with his future now decided.

Amass set to join Championship side

When it was confirmed that Wednesday wouldn’t be guaranteed Amass for the second half of the season, Stoke City and Watford made their interests well known.

Wednesday were still in the running for the left-back, but their choice not to sell a talented youngster to United could have cost them the chance to re-sign Amass.

Now, Andy Giddings has reported that a move to Norwich City is ‘close’. This is an interesting move for Amass, as it is a jump up from Wednesday (24th in the Championship) to 20th in the Championship.

However, it appeared he had the chance to move to eighth-place Watford or seventh-place Stoke. Perhaps United were concerned Amass wouldn’t play regularly there, but a return to Wednesday would’ve been more sensible if Amass had to return to the bottom of the Championship.

Six months on loan at Norwich is unlikely to give Amass the platform he needs to return to Old Trafford next season to compete for a first-team spot.

United may focus on Leon

Unfortunately for Amass, Leon may have already been chosen ahead of him as United’s future left-back, not forgetting Patrick Dorgu.

This could mean Amass is loaned out again before being sold again, purely for profit. United may look to copy Manchester City’s selling tactics with a lower original fee than they could demand, with lots of add-ons and sell-on clauses.

Leon was linked with a loan move to OGC Nice, but that appeared to be false rumours, with Leon still featuring for the under-21s.

The young Paraguayan could be loaned out in the summer window before mounting a shot at competing for a first-team spot in 2027/28, whereas Amass may be forced out the door, once again.
