Former Man Utd Chief Scout claims Michael Carrick “will get the job” as Omar Berrada’s preference revealed

Manchester United are searching for their next permanent head coach, as Michael Carrick looks to be in contention.

Michael Carrick’s short second stint in charge of Manchester United has been nothing short of superb, with five wins in his first six games on his return to the Old Trafford dugout.

The former England international has found a way to play attacking, exciting football, all while maintaining a solid defensive approach, as his side remains unbeaten.

While Carrick prepares to face Oliver Glasner’s Crystal Palace, CEO Omar Berrada and Director of Football Jason Wilcox are searching for their next permanent head coach, who will likely be in charge for the start of next season.

United have already suffered some managerial blows, with Thomas Tuchel signing a new contract with England and Carlo Ancelotti signing a new deal with Brazil.

Berrada’s preference revealed after Carrick claim

“Carrick continues to impress, the players clearly like him and there’s a real good feeling around the club that hasn’t been there for a long time,” said former United chief scout Mick Brown to Football Insider.

“I think he will get the job at the end of the season, they won’t make the decision now, though. But from what I hear coming out of the club, everybody has taken to him and his style and he’s very well-liked both by the higher-ups and with the players.”

As CEO, Berrada will be leading the search for the new head coach, along with Wilcox, and transfer specialist Pete O’Rourke has added to reports saying they would prefer a more experienced manager to replace Carrick and Rúben Amorim.

“Man United are looking for a top, elite manager to come into the club this summer,” he told the Transfer Insider podcast. “But their hunt for a new manager just gets more more complicated by the week because of the success of Michael Carrick.

“If Carrick continues this brilliant run of form, gets United in the top four, top three, Champions League football, there’s going to be a swell for him to get the job on a permanent basis.

“So it will be interesting to see how the season pans out from now. Man United are going really well under Carrick and you’d probably say he right now is in the driving seat.”

Should Carrick get the United job?

It’s safe to say that the majority of United fans have been very happy with Carrick’s style of football since his return to the dugout, and his man-management seems to be another strength for the former midfielder.

This issue is, though, United clearly prefer an experienced option to be the next full-time head coach at Old Trafford, and that’s not Carrick. He’s had just one full-time management role with Championship side Middlesbrough.

If United are set on an experienced option, they shouldn’t change their mind just because of Carrick’s impressive run of form. But this does feel different to Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s interim stint in charge of the club.

In the end, it’s on Berrada and Wilcox to make the final call.
