Florian Wirtz’s agent addresses Man United rumours as Kobbie Mainoo makes strong statement
Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz has attracted interest from various top European clubs, including Manchester United.
Wirtz, 20, is one of the most exciting midfield talents in the world and is currently leading his club towards a shock Bundesliga title.
Bayer Leverkusen are now seven points ahead of Bayern Munich with a game in hand on the current champions. Wirtz has eight goals and 17 assists for the German club this season.
It was reported by Sky Germany in November that Manchester United scouts had been watching the 20-year-old closely, with the Old Trafford club in the race alongside the likes of Liverpool and Bayern Munich.
The midfielder’s father and agent, Hans-Joachim Wirtz, has since addressed his son’s future and assured that he is focused on honouring his contract with Bayer Leverkusen.
“Florian has a contract in Leverkusen until 2027. That will also roughly be the amount of time he will spend in Leverkusen,” Hans-Joachim told Kolner Stadt-Anzeiger. “There is no answer to what happens when. We should wait for the next two years, and then we will see where the path leads.”
United already have a promising crop of young talent at the club, including the likes of Kobbie Mainoo, Rasmus Højlund and Alejandro Garnacho.
The trio have excited supporters during a difficult campaign this season, and all three celebrated together after Garnacho’s goal against West Ham last month.
However, when asked about the ‘iconic’ picture, Mainoo assured Sky Sports that they must succeed at United in order for it to be referred in that light.
“The picture is only iconic if we go on to do great things for this club,” stressed Mainoo. “If we can do that, hopefully, it will go in the history books.”
