Erik ten Hag has been told not to repeat one Manchester United line-up decision because supporters will turn on him.

The United manager has appeared to be walking on thin ice for several months now as the team still look to improve their dreadful form this term.

The Reds have already been knocked out of the Champions League, and Europe altogether, as well as the Carabao Cup. They currently sit eighth in the Premier League table.

Defeat against Nottingham Forest on 30 December ensured that 2020 became the year with the fourth-most defeats in the club’s history.

In that game, Ten Hag was widely criticised for his decision to replace Kobbie Mainoo with Scott McTominay at half-time. The Scotsman moved into the deepest midfield role, and both goals from Forest came from the defensive midfielder zone.

Mainoo played 90 minutes against Wigan Athletic on Monday as United progressed to the FA Cup fourth round. Scott McTominay also featured but played further forward instead. Ten Hag has been warned not to make the same mistake again; otherwise, the fanbase will question him.

“Manchester United are in serious, serious problems if Erik ten Hag ever chooses to have McTominay on the pitch instead of Kobbie Mainoo again,” said ex-Man United defender Paul Parker, speaking to bettors.ng.

“Scott McTominay is never disciplined and it does cost Man United a lot of goals against, we saw it against Nottingham Forest as well.

“He has nowhere near the quality and energy that Mainoo has. Mainoo is a young lad with a lot of energy, and everything about him suggests that he should play.

“He has shown incredible talent and he is one of the few positives about this club at this moment in time.

“The fanbase will start questioning Erik ten Hag even more in the future if he decides to play with McTominay ahead of Mainoo.”
