Fabrizio Romano has delivered an important update on the future of Manchester United centre-back Raphaël Varane amid uncertainty over his future.

Varane, 30, has entered the final months of his United contract and will be free to leave Old Trafford at the end of the season if a new deal is not agreed beforehand.

The club refused to trigger the one-year extension in the Frenchman’s current contract as they want him to re-sign on a lower wage.

A recent report from Todofichajes stated that Varane wanted to remain at the Premier League club and was willing to accept lower terms in a new deal.

However, Fabrizio Romano has since explained that there has been no proposal from United yet and there remains a ‘concrete’ possibility that the defender leaves at the end of the season on a free contract.

The Italian journalist said on his podcast: “In the last 24 hours, we have had some reports about a proposal coming from United, maybe with the new structure of a new deal based on appearances, titles to win, and these kinds of things.

“What I’m told on Varane, is quite clear at the moment. From my understanding, Man United have not presented an official proposal to extend the contract of Varane.

“So, at the moment, there is a really concrete possibility for Varane to leave as a free agent at the end of the season. At the moment, nothing is being negotiated.

“This proposal that has been in the media in the last 24 hours is not confirmed… Let’s see what Man United will decide to do close to the end of the season, but as of now, no concrete negotiation and so a concrete chance for Varane to leave on a free.”

Varane has played 91 matches for Manchester United since he signed from Real Madrid in the summer of 2021.
