Sir Jim Ratcliffe has revealed the key position that he thinks Manchester United are missing, with his dream player for the role being a legend of the club.

Erik ten Hag’s side have experienced major difficulties this term after a positive debut campaign under the Dutchman.

United’s last chance of silverware remains the FA Cup following their quarter-final victory against Liverpool on the weekend.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe has started to get his feet under the table at Old Trafford after his investment was ratified by Premier League authorities last month.

Of course, the British billionaire’s first major challenge at the club will be the upcoming summer transfer window, with the moves made in those months being highly important.

There are several different positions that need attention, but Ratcliffe has himself admitted that a particular role in the midfield is the one that is “most missing” in Ten Hag’s squad.

Despite the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo and the experience of Casemiro, the United co-owener has suggested that a Paul Scholes-type is absent in the United team.

When asked on the Geraint Thomas Cycling Club which United legend he’d love to have in his prime, Ratcliffe said: “Paul Scholes I’d bring in. That’s the player that is most missing.

“They are not Roy Keane but they have Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo, they are more defensive.

“They don’t have a Scholes, an (Andrés) Iniesta.”

This is, of course, an interesting response from Ratcliffe since United do have the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Mason Mount to offer that attacking threat from midfield.

However, the players he mentioned offer different attributes, which would be needed in a United team that struggles to dictate games.
