Manchester United have been linked with a variety of midfielders in recent weeks, including Monaco star Youssouf Fofana.

After securing Leny Yoro and Joshua Zirkzee early on in the window, United are now moving their attention to the centre of midfield.

It was an area of weakness in Erik ten Hag’s side last season and now several players have uncertain Old Trafford futures.

Casemiro, Christian Eriksen and Scott McTominay have all been linked with moves away from the club this summer. At least one midfield signing is a necessity.

Youssouf Fofana of Monaco has emerged as a potential option at a lower price. AC Milan are targeting the midfielder for less than £30 million.

However, Fabrizio Romano has revealed that while United have had talks with the French club about the 25-year-old, as well as right-back Vanderson, the main options for the position remain Sofyan Amrabat and Manuel Ugarte.

“Manchester United had some conversations with Monaco to understand the availability of players like Youssouf Fofana and Vanderson,” Romano stated in his Daily Briefing.

“But my understanding is that, internally, the main names Man United are discussing for the midfield are PSG’s Manuel Ugarte and Sofyan Amrabat.”

Amrabat played at United on loan last season but the club have explained to Fiorentina that they do not want to trigger the existing buy-option clause for the Morrocan.

Instead, they are looking to see if they can renegotiate at a lower price.

Meanwhile, the main obstacle to a deal for Ugarte is the price tag that Paris Saint-Germain want to receive. The Uruguayan midfielder reportedly wants to make a move to United.
