Erik ten Hag has been slammed for a moment with Alejandro Garnacho following Manchester United’s 1-1 draw against FC Twente in the Europa League.

During Manchester United‘s opening Europa League fixture of the season, Erik ten Hag saw his club fall to a 1-1 draw against his boyhood side, FC Twente.

Although Christian Eriksen scored a wonderful goal in the first half, the Danish international had a lapse in concentration with 20 minutes to go, which saw the Dutch side steal an equaliser.

Despite throwing on Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho, and Rasmus Højlund, United could not capitalise on late pressure, with the tie ending in a disappointing draw.

After the fixture, Dutch footballing legend Ruud Gullit was incredibly critical of Ten Hag, slamming a moment he had with Garnacho before he stepped onto the field.

“I saw Erik ten Hag talking to Garnacho all the time. The only thing a player is thinking during a moment like that is: ‘Dude, leave me alone’,” Gullet told Dutch TV full-time.

Further, Gullit said: I am not surprised by the football Manchester United showed tonight. Why not? Because we are used to it by now… How many millions did Erik ten Hag invest in his team again?”

After the result, Ten Hag himself admitted that the draw was United’s own doing. They failed to finish their chances, keeping hope for Twente alive until their equaliser.

“We kept them alive, 1-0 up, controlling the game – you have to be consistent and keep going,” he told TNT Sports. “In the second half, we dropped the level [and] gave the goal away.

“We didn’t finish it off; we had to go for the second goal, and so they stay alive, and we get punished with a mistake from ourselves.”

United’s next fixture is a home game against Tottenham Hotspur, who they will welcome to Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon.
