Erik ten Hag provides disappointing update on Man United star, fans have been proven correct
Erik ten Hag has provided a disappointing injury update on one Manchester United star ahead of the Carabao Cup clash against Barnsley.
Manchester United have had a somewhat inconsistent start to the Premier League season, securing just two wins from their first four games.
Erik ten Hag will aim to build on the team’s recent 3-0 victory over Southampton to spark a winning streak.
Next up is a Carabao Cup match against Barnsley, followed by consecutive fixtures against Crystal Palace in the Premier League and FC Twente in the Europa League.
With a packed schedule ahead, United will be hoping to see some players return from injury sooner rather than later.
Ten Hag provides disappointing Shaw update
Luke Shaw has been unavailable for the start of the season after suffering an injury during pre-season.
The left-back only returned to Carrington at the start of August after being provided an extended break following his participation at Euro 2024 with England.
He played four games, including the final against Spain, during the summer tournament as he recovered from injury throughout the summer.
Shaw was expected to return against Southampton on the weekend, but he was not ready for that game and was not fit to play in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday.
“He’s progressing but not yet ready to be selected. He is progressing well,” the manager said during his pre-match press conference.
However, the manager was unable to provide any timescale on when Shaw will return to the side, which suggests that he isn’t as close as he would hope.
“Of course, we have a plan in our head when he can be ready, but you’re always dependent on how the progress will go,” he added.
“You can’t think, you can’t make a suggestion because there are so many factors. A plan can accelerate or slow down.”
United fans have been proven correct on Shaw
Shaw’s last game for United was in February against Luton Town, and many fans were questioning his inclusion in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the summer tournament.
Rather than an entire summer of rest ahead of a crucial season at Old Trafford, Shaw was working tirelessly to be fit for his country in the Euros.
Not many people can really blame him if you look at the situation in isolation. Any player would want to play for their nation at a major tournament, but considering how much football he has already missed for United, it is disappointing that he remains out of action.
United fans had concerns, and they seem to have been proven correct. As things stand, all Shaw can do is recover fully, ensure he has no other serious setbacks this season, and perform for Ten Hag’s side. But that seems more complicated than it should be.
