David de Gea has reportedly requested a £33-a-week contract from a Serie A club as he looks to return to football after leaving Manchester United.

David de Gea left Manchester United as a free agent in the summer of 2023 after spending 12 largely successful seasons as the No. 1 goalkeeper at Old Trafford.

During his time at the club, he played through the final seasons of Sir Alex Ferguson before becoming the first-choice goalkeeper under David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho, and Ole Gunnar Solskjær.

However, due to his high wages, the club elected not to extend his final contract, and he left the summer after Erik ten Hag joined and the same summer that the Dutchman brought in André Onana as the new shot-stopper at Old Trafford.

Since his departure, De Gea has had multiple offers to continue plying his trade elsewhere but has failed to land a move. Rumours state that he wanted to play for a Champions League club and rejected proposals from Saudi Arabia.

There were recent links between the Spaniard and La Liga side Girona, but these were eventually denied. However, it seems as if the 33-year-old may be on his way to the Serie A.

According to the Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport, via Football Italia, De Gea has been in talks with Fiorentina over signing a fresh contract that would see him return to football 14 months after his initial departure.

According to the report, De Gea has asked for a one-year contract with an option for a further year. The first year would see him earn €2 million net (around £33,000 a week) plus a further €1 million in add-on. The second year would see him earn €3 million (Around £50,000 a week) plus €1 million in add-ons.

Considering that De Gea’s final salary at United was estimated to be around £375,000 a week, this is a significant drop—but with the player having spent 15 years as a professional footballer, money will now be less of a motivation.

Fiorentina finished 8th in the Serie A last campaign, meaning they just missed out on qualifying to play European football next season.
