Argentina manager Lionel Scanoli has explained his reason for excluding Manchester United winger Alejandro Garnacho from his latest international squad.

United players have jetted off to different countries across the world to represent their nations for the next two weeks. However, Garnacho has remained with his club due to not being selected for his country.

The teenage winger made his Argentina debut earlier this year following an impressive 2022/23 campaign for Erik ten Hag’s side.

Now, Scanoli has stated that Garnacho’s form is a reason why he wasn’t selected and that he would be unlikely to be afforded minutes on the pitch.

“The reason for not calling up Garnacho? Ale’s non-selection is due to a form issue,” he said in his press conference this week.

“We don’t like to bring players in and constantly leave them out or leave them out of the squad. Everyone wants to be there and it’s great, but the human side plays and you have to make decisions.”

“It would have been easy to bring him in, but in the last few call-ups he didn’t get minutes and there are times when you have to make decisions, but he’s a guy who’s on our radar and he’s going to continue to be there and he has a huge future.”

Garnacho, like other United attackers, has struggled so far this term. Marcus Rashford is the only forward player to score in the Premier League, and he’s only netted once. Although the 19-year-old has broken into the starting XI in recent games.

Garnacho’s snub from his nation could work in favour of United, who need their players fully fit, fresh and driven for the upcoming fixture list in an attempt to turn their season around.

Ten Hag’s side play against Everton away on 26 November in the Premier League before an all-important Champions League clash against Galatasaray in Turkey, where a loss would confirm United’s exit from the competition.
