Alejandro Garnacho handed blow as Man United teammate will have ‘sleepless nights’ over international break

Alejandro Garnacho has made 16 appearances for Manchester United this season and started the last three games before the international break.

The teenager has scored just once and is yet to register an assist – although he would’ve had one at Fulham if a controversial VAR decision did not interfere – for a United team that is struggling up front.

Last time out the winger had an opportunity to score on the break but took an extra touch which squandered the opportunity. Something that has become a regularity across the board for the team this season.

His form of late has been impressive enough to push Marcus Rashford to the right wing in the last three games, however, Garnacho has been handed a blow in terms of his international status after he was left out of the Argentina squad for upcoming fixtures.

Lionel Scanoli has preferred the likes of Nicolas Gonzalez, Giovani Lo Celso and Lucas Ocampos to the young United attacker.

Garnacho has made three appearances for the Argentina first team. He made his debut against Australia on 15 June earlier this year.

Meanwhile, the Argentine’s teammate upfront, Rasmus Hojlund, has pulled out of international duty with Denmark after picking up a knock during United’s win over Luton Town.

However, it will be his Premier League goalscoring woes that will keep him up at night until he’s able to break his duck in the competition.

That’s how Newcastle legend Alan Shearer sees it. United’s next game comes against Everton in two weeks and Hojlund will be desperate to be fit so that he can open his account in the league.

“I feel a bit sorry for him,” Shearer said on The Rest is Football podcast.

“He shouldn’t be in the position he is in, in terms of the fee that’s been paid for him and the pressure that is on him. He should be one that is in, then out, using him as a substitute and starting him here and there.

“They should have a big hitter in there so I do have a bit of sympathy for him. I do see that there is a potential goal-scorer in there. He will be having sleepless nights with what is happening in front of goal in the Premier League.”

Hojlund has scored five times in the Champions League so far for the club and has become the quickest United player to hit ever that tally, but he remains goalless in the league format.
