Alan Shearer has included five Manchester United players in his best-ever Premier League XI as he names Wayne Rooney alongside himself in a frightening front three.

The Premier League’s top goalscorer was one of the few players that Sir Alex Ferguson was unable to convince to move to Old Trafford.

Shearer enjoyed a successful goalscoring career at Southampton, Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United, scoring 260 goals in the Premier League over 13 years.

When asked on the BBC to decide on the 11 best players in the division since the inception of the Premier League in 1992, the Newcastle legend had several tough decisions to make.

Some of the simpler ones, however, were the inclusions of Peter Schmeichel and Rio Ferdinand in the defensive set-up. He added Chelsea dup John Terry and Ashley Cole, as well as United legend Gary Neville, who would’ve had stiff competition on the right side from the likes of Kyle Walker.

“I just think because of that team he played in, to be a regular in that team season in, season out, that’s why I put him in there – longevity. What he won in that great team,” explained Shearer when discussing Neville’s place in his team.

In the midfield, the former striker only included one Man United player, as he chose Patrick Viera over Roy Keane at the base of his engine room. In front of the Arsenal legend were Paul Scholes and Steven Gerrard.

“I could’ve quite easily put Roy in there, he’s equally as a fierce competitor [as Viera] – I was always going to have Gerrard and Scholes and then it was going to be a matter of Viera or Keane and I just went for Viera.

“Would it be unfair to say he was a slightly better player? Could do more with the ball than Roy. Roy was a great captain and great leader.”

Moving into the forward line and Shearer placed himself in the number nine position, something that is hard to argue with given his excellent goal record.

Flanking him would be Wayne Rooney and Thierry Henry, both considered as two of the best players to ever grace the league as they sit at number two and seven respectively on the all-time goalscoring chart behind Shearer, although Henry did spend more time outside of the league.
