Andy Cole has explained that, with a bit of time, two of Erik ten Hag’s brightest stars will be back to their best for Manchester United.

Manchester United‘s season has been nothing short of a disaster so far. The club are languishing in 14th place in the Premier League and still without a win in the Europa League.

Draws against teams like Crystal PalaceFC Porto, and FC Twente, along with 3-0 defeats at Old Trafford to Liverpool and Tottenham, have left Erik ten Hag and his squad open to heavy criticism.

In particular, some of United’s best players have been under heavy fire, with Bruno Fernandes and Lisandro Martínez taking large amounts of stick for inconsistencies.

Fernandes has already been shown two red cards so far this season, and Lisandro Martínez was recently dropped in favour of 36-year-old Jonny Evans. Both players have failed to live up to the expectations set.

Recently, former United striker Andy Cole was questioned whether he is worried about Fernandes and Martínez’s form. In reply, Cole explained that, given some time, something that is often not afforded at the club, both players will be back to their very best for the club.

“With Bruno, I’m not,” Cole told BetFred. “I know a lot of people don’t like him and how he acts, but I like the guy because he never leaves a stone unturned.

“He always gives 100%, and I know he moans and screams a little bit more than others, but he only does that because it’s for himself as much as his teammates.

“His form will come back, and this period right now is probably the only time he’s ever been out of form throughout the entirety of his Manchester United career, so you can’t really question him because this has been the only time. He will get there because he plays with his heart on his sleeve and he shows that fire and determination.

“Regarding Martínez, on Thursday against Porto, he and [Matthijs] De Ligt both found it really tough. Not usually do they come up against a centre-forward like Samu [Omorodion] that’s physical and good in the air. The pair of them got bullied.

“His form hasn’t been great this season, and it’s the first time that anybody’s really questioned it. When he first came to Manchester United, he struggled, but he then, almost immediately, started performing really well. He, like Bruno, will come back, it’s just a matter of time.”
