Former England strikers Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker agree on what Rúben Amorim will tell Ruud van Nistelrooy in their Manchester United meeting.

Ruud van Nistelrooy‘s interim tenure as Manchester United‘s manager concluded with a 3-0 Premier League victory over Leicester City on November 10, 2024.

This win followed a 2-0 triumph against PAOK in the Europa League, a 1-1 draw with Chelsea in the Premier League, and a 5-2 Carabao Cup victory over Leicester. These results have provided positive momentum for the team as Rúben Amorim assumes the head coach position on November 11.

Van Nistelrooy has expressed his desire to remain with the club in any capacity, stating, “I’m here to help the club as long as I’m needed.”

However, his future role remains uncertain, as Amorim is expected to bring his own coaching staff. The club has yet to make an official decision regarding Van Nistelrooy’s position moving forward.

The Manchester United squad has reportedly appreciated Van Nistelrooy’s leadership during this interim period and is keen for him to continue in some capacity. As the club transitions under Amorim’s leadership, discussions about Van Nistelrooy’s future involvement are anticipated.

Shearer’s Amorim prediction

Amorim and Van Nistelrooy are expected to meet on Monday for crunch talks surrounding the Dutchman’s future, with the 39-year-old head coach bringing multiple of his own staff to Old Trafford as part of his transition from Sporting.

Speaking on the The Rest Is Football podcast, former England strikers Alan Shearer and Gary Lineker believe Amorim will tell Van Nistelrooy that he feels a clean break is the best option going forward.

“He’s a big personality, you get the feeling he wants to be a number one,” Shearer said. “He wants to be a manager.

“It wouldn’t surprise me at all if he was to have a clean break and say, ‘I’ve done what was asked of me, thank you very much’, and Amorim came in and had a clean sweep. He’s bringing all his own people in.

“Then Ruud can go and find himself a number one job somewhere. He’s done himself no harm at all. In fact, he’s done a great job. He’s done everything asked of him and more. He’s settled the ship, he’s picked up points as they had to do, he’s got the results as they had to do.

“Everyone knows how much he loves Man United, and they love him. That’s not going to change. So it wouldn’t surprise me if he shook hands and said, ‘Thanks very much’.”

Lineker agrees on Van Nistelrooy

Lineker echoed Shearer’s thoughts, explaining that Amorim may choose to make sure no senior coach from the previous regime under Erik ten Hag remains at United.

“It also wouldn’t surprise me if Ruben Amorim comes in and goes ‘do you really want someone who’s been part of the previous regime in there?’

“Especially a big personality like that, and where do you place him? Is he first assistant? I think it might be a little bit awkward, and I suspect, like you, Alan, he might go elsewhere.”

News on Van Nistelrooy’s future is expected in the coming days.
