Speaking to the media ahead of the game on Sunday, Graham Potter has credited the Manchester United supporters for backing Ruben Amorim during a “difficult spell”.
Ruben Amorim’s time as Manchester United manager has not been easy going, from joining in the middle of a horrid run of form, to serious injuries to key players, but throughout the supporters have continued to back him.
Not a game goes by without United fans singing “He’ll bring the glory days again,” a song for the Portuguese manager, based on Bonnie Tyler’s “It’s a heartache”.
It’s clear that the Red Army absolutely adore Amorim, but the faithful fans have always backed their managers during difficult times, especially during Ole Gunnar Solskjær and Erik ten Hag’s time in charge.
However, the support for Amorim appears to be different to managers in the past and other clubs have began to recognise this.
Potter praises United support for Amorim
Speaking to the media ahead of West Ham’s trip to Old Trafford on Sunday, Graham Potter was questioned about Amorim’s time as United manager.
He suggested that the support from the fanbase and those in charge at the club have been crucial for Amorim during a “difficult spell” at Old Trafford.
“It’s a tough job to go in when he did [November], with multiple challenges. I think the club is in a position where there is lots of change and credit to Manchester United and the supporters there,” he said.
“They’ve supported him through a difficult spell and I think you need that, of course, and he’s in the final now so it’s a great opportunity to have a fantastic season, in the end.”
Potter would know better than most how important support is when you’re at a big club during a rebuild, having potentially lacked the support he needed while managing Chelsea.
Taking the West Ham job was Potter’s return to management after leaving Chelsea, having been hailed as one of the best English managers of this generation while managing Brighton and Hove Albion.
Potter makes no changes ahead of United game
Having not won in the last eight, since beating Leicester City 2-0, Potter was asked if he was considering changing anything about his preparation ahead of their visit to Old Trafford.
“Your job is always to analyse and to look to see how you can improve and what you can do differently,” the English manager added. “Sometimes the result is the result and you can end up chasing your tail if you’re not too careful.”
He continued: “One thing you can say about this league is the margins are so tight, you can see how competitive it is, but no one is getting away from the fact that we’re disappointed.
“We have to put that [their poor performances] aside for the moment until we play the game on Sunday and hopefully go there with a good performance and a good points return.”
A win for West Ham could take them above United and Tottenham, moving them up to 14th if other results go their way.
