Why Noussair Mazraoui was subbed off during Man United’s win over Southampton
Noussair Mazraoui was replaced midway through the second half of Manchester United’s 3-0 win against Southampton.
Erik ten Hag made two adjustments to his starting lineup as United faced Southampton in the Premier League, with Amad Diallo and Christian Eriksen replacing Alejandro Garnacho and Casemiro.
Southampton came out strong, applying early pressure and forcing André Onana into several important saves.
The first major moment occurred when Diogo Dalot fouled Tyler Dibling in the box, but Onana saved the resulting penalty, and the game seemed to turn after that.
Matthijs de Ligt scored his first goal for United minutes later, heading in a cross from Bruno Fernandes. Marcus Rashford followed up with a second before the break, placing his shot low past Aaron Ramsdale.
In the second half, United remained in control. Joshua Zirkzee missed a great chance to score, but substitute Alejandro Garnacho secured the 3-0 victory with a late strike.
Ten Hag explains Mazraoui sub
Noussair Mazraoui provided yet another assured display at right-back for United in this game. He made 36 passes, completed all three of his attempted take-ons and won four ground duels.
However, the Moroccan fullback was replaced by Harry Maguire midway through the second half and looked in a little bit of discomfort on the bench after coming off.
United ended the game with a back four of Diogo Dalot, Harry Maguire, Casemiro and Jonny Evans after Matthijs de Ligt and Lisandro Martínez also came off.
Ten Hag eased concerns about potential injury issues after the game, saying that the difficulties of returning late after the international break contributed to the changes made.
Although he did confirm that the medical team will be assessing the issues over the next 24 hours.
“We had internationals early in the season, some are short in the pre-season, some come from intercontinental flights then when you have a 12:30 kick-off, you can struggle,” he told TNT Sports.
“Hopefully, it’s nothing serious, and we have to assess today and tomorrow.”
