Matthijs de Ligt has sent a subtle dig to former club Bayern Munich as Manchester United make another change behind the scenes.

De Ligt, 25, joined United from Bayern Munich in the summer transfer window alongside right-back Noussair Mazraoui.

The defensive pair have strengthened Erik ten Hag’s backline, with Mazraoui already putting some decent performances in. While De Ligt’s only start was the defeat against Liverpool, he was one of the few positives from the game.

Signing De Ligt seemed like it came five years too late for United, with the club regularly linked to the Dutch defender since his standout campaign in the 2018/19 season for Ten Hag’s Ajax side.

However, there is excitement about the transfer finally being made now, and it was a move that upset many Bayern supporters, with a petition to keep the defender getting 70,000 signatures earlier this summer.

Despite this, De Ligt has made a subtle dig at his former club when discussing his move to Old Trafford on international duty.

After the Netherlands won 5-2 against Bosnia and Herzegovina, with Joshua Zirkzee putting in a standout performance, De Ligt made clear that playing in the Premier League is superior to the Bundesliga in terms of those watching.

“I am happy with my move to Manchester United,” he told reporters, as per The European Lad. “Also, because I stay in the picture. The Premier League has more viewers, the Bundesliga lesser.”

While it is simply a truthful observation from the 25-year-old, it may aggravate a few German supporters.

Meanwhile, the Reds are set to introduce a new addition to their staff on Monday, with Sam Erith coming in as performance director on an interim basis until the end of the season.

Erith specialises in player performance and sports science and has previously worked with EnglandManchester City, and Tottenham Hotspur.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS team have made significant changes across the board at Old Trafford since taking charge, but this may be one of the more significant additions due to the importance they place on performance and sports science.

Reports from MailOnline have stated that Erith is likely to be tasked with ensuring Erik ten Hag and his players are provided with an elite environment in which to challenge.
